Why isn’t Jack Draper participating in the Australian Open?
It’s a question that has sparked interest among tennis fans, especially considering the excitement surrounding his anticipated return to the sport in Melbourne. However, despite being expected to compete, Draper is notably absent from the main draw of 128 players in the men's singles event down under.
At just 24 years old, Draper has faced significant challenges over the past year. Since his early exit at Wimbledon last summer, where he lost in the second round to the skilled Croatian player Marin Cilic—who secured victory with scores of 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4—Draper has only been able to play a single singles match. This loss came as a disappointment, especially since he was seeded fourth at SW19, yet couldn't replicate the impressive form he demonstrated earlier in 2025 on the grass courts.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Draper explained his decision: "Unfortunately, my team and I have decided not to head out to Australia this year. It was an incredibly difficult choice. Grand Slam tournaments like the Australian Open hold immense significance in our sport, making this decision all the more challenging.
"Nevertheless, I’ve been dealing with this injury for quite some time now. I’m nearing the final stages of my recovery, and jumping back onto the court for best-of-five-set matches right now doesn’t seem wise for both my health and my game.
"I’ve encountered my fair share of setbacks throughout my career, but this one has undoubtedly proven to be the most arduous, complex, and demanding challenge I’ve faced."
Before focusing on his singles career, Draper had partnered with Jessica Pegula in the revamped mixed doubles event at the US Open. The duo made headlines by defeating notable players Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, as well as Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva, before falling to the eventual runners-up, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud.
Draper’s absence from Melbourne Park means that British representation in the men’s singles draw is somewhat limited this year. Cameron Norrie stands as the primary representative, accompanied by Jacob Fearnley and qualifier Arthur Fery. Norrie, who concluded 2025 on a high note, is seeded 26th as he enters the season’s first Grand Slam. He recently avenged a previous defeat against Alcaraz during the second round of the Paris Masters, though he ended his year with a final loss at the Moselle Open to the rising American star Learner Tien.
Fearnley, currently ranked No. 77 in the world, previously lost to Norrie in the third round at Roland-Garros last year, following his noteworthy triumph over Australian favorite Nick Kyrgios in the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Fery, ranked No. 185 globally, impressively navigated through three qualifying rounds to secure his place in the main draw, including a victory over the charismatic Bernard Tomic in the second round. He will now face off against the 20th seed Flavio Cobolli.
