Super Rugby Pacific 2026 Pre-Season Kickoff: Crusaders vs Highlanders, Blues vs Hurricanes & More! (2026)

Super Rugby Pacific Pre-Season Fixtures: A Delight for Fans

Super Rugby Pacific fans are in for a treat with a trio of pre-season fixtures set to kick off on Friday. The action will see the Blues take on the Hurricanes, the Chiefs face off against the Fijian Drua, and the Crusaders battle it out with the Highlanders. These matches mark the first outings for the new players participating in the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The defending champions, the Crusaders, will be playing at Fraser Park in Timaru on Friday afternoon. One of the highlights for the Crusaders will be the debut of Oli Mathis on the flank, stepping into the role once occupied by Tom Christie, now with Newcastle in England. Fellow loose forward Ethan Blackadder has praised Mathis' versatility, noting his unique ability to move like a back, which is not a common sight.

Blackadder himself has recovered well from a thumb injury sustained last year and is eager to start the season. First five-eighths Rivez Reihana will take over the reins in the second half, having gained valuable experience last year and performed well with the Māori All Blacks and the All Blacks XV on their northern tour.

Reihana shared his enthusiasm, stating that the tour was enjoyable and helped him maintain form and continuity. With a year of experience under his belt, he's ready to dive into the new season with determination.

Coach Rob Penney expressed the coaching staff's desire for some game evolution, emphasizing the importance of putting in hard work and translating it into action against opposition. This pre-season also provides an opportunity for newer players to gain valuable game time.

Despite the desire to improve from last year's performance, Penney acknowledges the unique challenges each season brings, regardless of previous outcomes. Meanwhile, Highlanders assistant coach Ben Smith believes the team is well-prepared for the game after their pre-season training.

Smith is excited to witness the performances of newcomers like Stanley Solomon and Tito Harris. The decision to place Taine Robinson at fullback instead of his usual first five-eighths position hints at the team's recognition of his versatility.

Additionally, Smith highlights the encouraging signs from second five-eighths Timoci Tavatavanawai and No8 Hugh Renton, who are recovering from surgery and set to return soon.

On Friday, the Blues will host the Hurricanes at Sacred Heart College, while the Chiefs will face the Fijian Drua at Blake Park in Mt Maunganui.
