Por Kee Review: XXL Pork Ribs & Old-School Zi Char in Tiong Bahru | Singapore Food Guide (2026)

Por Kee Review: Renowned Zi Char Spot Featuring XXL Pork Ribs and More in Tiong Bahru

If you’re a fan of authentic zi char cuisine, then you’ll be intrigued to learn about Por Kee Eating House, established in 1996. This iconic eatery has become synonymous with exceptional Cantonese offerings in the Tiong Bahru district.

In Singapore, where numerous zi char restaurants abound, it’s not uncommon for these establishments to present similar dishes influenced by familiar culinary traditions. The standout spots, however, are those that offer unique specialties or execute classic recipes with remarkable skill. Por Kee Eating House falls into the latter category, consistently delivering high-quality meals that satisfy even the most discerning palates.

As its name indicates, the restaurant opened its doors back in 1996 and has since garnered a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. With over 40 Cantonese-style dishes available, we opted to sample just three during our recent visit, and we enjoyed every bite.

The first dish on our table was the Champagne Long Rib, priced at around $12+ per piece. This dish is touted as a house specialty and features a substantial pork rib glazed to perfection, accompanied by a side of chye sim that adds a pop of color to the presentation.

Could anyone who loves meat possibly resist this impressive cut? The rib glistens enticingly under the light, thanks to its house-made champagne sauce that offers a delightful balance of caramelized sweetness and a hint of alcohol. While some diners might find the flavor profile overly sweet, it’s hard to complain when the meat itself is incredibly tender and practically falls off the bone.

Next up were the Cereal Prawns, priced at approximately $26+. This dish is a classic in the zi char repertoire, and while Por Kee may not reinvent the wheel here, they certainly prepare it well enough to warrant your order. The prawns are coated in crunchy, savory cereal flakes, complemented by a touch of curry leaves, making each bite a delightful experience. However, the size of the prawns could leave some diners wanting more; although the quantity on the plate helps, the small size slightly detracts from the overall enjoyment.

To complete our meal, we ordered the HK-style Steamed Fish for $35+, a must-have when it comes to zi char dining. This sea bass was bathed in a light soy sauce that beautifully enhanced the fish’s delicate flesh without overpowering it. We were particularly impressed by how fresh and flaky the fish was, with a subtle sweetness that seamlessly contrasted with the bolder flavors of the other dishes, providing a perfect balance to our meal.

One could interpret the number 1996 in Por Kee’s name as not just a founding date, but as a testament to the nostalgic vibe that permeates the restaurant. It boasts a retro Chinese decor reminiscent of traditional dining halls, making it feel almost like stepping back in time—a charming quality that many patrons appreciate.

Located just a short 12-minute stroll from Outram Park MRT Station, Por Kee Eating House makes for an accessible dining option.

In conclusion, if you’re in search of delectable, traditional zi char fare, Por Kee Eating House is undoubtedly worth considering. The dishes we sampled ranged from solid to truly outstanding, leaving us confident that the remainder of their menu will impress as well.
