Bold take: NBC’s Newlyweds is shaping up to be a high-profile reunion you won’t want to miss. Tim Daly is set to star opposite Téa Leoni in the network’s multi-camera comedy pilot, marking a fresh chapter for both performers and a potential fan favorite for the upcoming season. Daly has officially closed his deal to join Leoni, and the project is spearheaded by co-creators Gail Lerner and Jamie Lee Curtis. The pairing harks back to a familiar note, as Daly and Leoni previously shared screen chemistry as a married couple on the 2014 CBS drama Madam Secretary.
Newlyweds centers on a late-blooming romance between Jeanie, a free-spirited woman played by Leoni, and Tony, a more conservative professor portrayed by Daly. After a whirlwind courtship, they marry impulsively, setting up a narrative about choosing love over a quietly predictable life. When Tony, newly divorced, spots Jeanie at a valet stand, a chance encounter sparks a dinner that changes everything. He quickly realizes that his ideal of quiet domestic life isn’t compatible with Jeanie’s vibrant energy, but he’s willing to adapt because life without her isn’t appealing either.
Jamie Lee Curtis was previously attached to play Jeanie in an earlier version of the project and is now expected to appear as Tony’s ex-wife in the NBC iteration. Lerner and Curtis will executive-produce alongside Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, Scott Schwartz, and Lionsgate Television, with Leoni also serving as a producer.
The pilot comes from Universal Television and will be directed by Pam Fryman, a veteran multi-camera director known for her work on popular series like How I Met Your Mother. Fryman also helmed the pilot for NBC’s successful sophomore sitcom Happy’s Place and is involved in developing potential companion shows for that series, including Newlyweds.
Daly’s resume includes a familiar NBC connection from Wings, along with an Emmy-nominated stint on The Sopranos. He’s maintained a steady TV presence with a recurring role in the Netflix comedy Leanne and recent guest spots on Hulu’s Life & Beth with Amy Schumer. He is represented by IAG, Gateway Management & Production, and Behr Abramson Levy Johnson.
