Get ready to dive into the exciting world of architecture and witness the unveiling of Liverpool University's new school of architecture! A game-changer in the making, this project is set to revolutionize architectural education.

The school, which has already welcomed its inaugural batch of students, boasts an impressive 3,000m² three-storey extension, adding a fresh new dimension to a former car park. But that's not all; it also includes a thoughtful remodelling of the existing school facilities.

Work is still underway to revamp the iconic Leverhulme Building, designed by the renowned Charles Reilly in the 1930s and later refurbished by King and McAllister in the 1980s. The neighbouring Georgian residential terrace is also getting a much-needed facelift.

The project was awarded to the Irish architectural practice O'Donnell + Tuomey, following a rigorous two-stage selection process that involved a diverse panel of judges, including undergraduates, postgraduates, school staff, and the estates department. The competition was chaired by the esteemed architecture critic Kenneth Frampton, alongside Tate director Maria Balshaw and the late architect Michael Wilford.

O'Donnell + Tuomey emerged victorious from a longlist of 18 invited practices, which was later narrowed down to six for the final judging day. Other notable practices in the running included 6a architects, Eric Parry Architects, Carmody Groarke, Haworth Tompkins, and Grafton Architects, all of whom brought their unique vision to the table.

Marco Iuliano, an architecture professor at the school and the mastermind behind the original competition, described the building's opening as a 'major milestone'. He emphasized the university's unwavering commitment and O'Donnell + Tuomey's resilience in creating an architectural masterpiece, reflecting the competition's ambition.

But here's where it gets controversial... Iuliano highlighted the unique involvement of students and staff in the decision-making process from day one. He believes the educational aspect has been a critical component of the entire challenge, transforming the project into a constant workshop with no parallels in architectural education.

The extension seamlessly integrates overlapping studios, exhibition spaces, teaching areas, offices, and even a café. It received the green light from Liverpool City Council in 2022.

And this is the part most people miss... The AJ Small Projects 2026 Award will be hosted at the new architecture school in late April, marking the first time the public will have access to the new extension. Stay tuned for more details from the AJ!

So, what do you think? Is this project a step towards revolutionizing architectural education? Or is it just another building with a fancy design? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
