Capitals Lineup Shake-up: McIlrath IN for Chisholm, Carlson OUT AGAIN! (2026)

A bold lineup change is on the cards for the Washington Capitals as they face the Utah Mammoth. But here's the twist: it's not about John Carlson's return, as many might expect.

Carlson, the veteran defender, remains sidelined due to a lower-body injury, and his absence will stretch into a fourth consecutive game. Despite skating on Tuesday, he's still in a no-contact jersey, leaving head coach Spencer Carbery with a 'day-to-day' decision.

"No, he's not playing," Carbery confirmed, adding that Carlson's status remains uncertain.

In Carlson's absence, Dylan McIlrath steps up. McIlrath, who last played on January 31 against the Carolina Hurricanes, will replace Declan Chisholm, who has been on a hot streak with two assists in the team's last three games.

"While Carlson sits, McIlrath rises," said Carbery. "McIlrath will bring his physical presence and experience to the ice, which we believe will be a valuable asset against the Mammoth."

McIlrath's last appearance was in January, where he averaged 7:30 of ice time per game. Despite his limited playing time, the Capitals have seen a team-low 42.5% of shot attempts during his five-on-five minutes.

With Carlson out, Carbery was asked about the potential strain on the top-four defenders. "I don't believe fatigue is a major concern for our defense," Carbery assured. "Everyone is stepping up in John's absence, and we're asking for a little more from each player - a few extra quality minutes across all situations. The D-corps has handled it admirably so far."

Additionally, Carbery confirmed that Logan Thompson will reclaim the starter's net after Charlie Lindgren's recent 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Thompson has faced the Mammoth once before, in a 5-4 shootout loss at Capital One Arena last year.

The Mammoth, fresh from a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, currently hold the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference with a 31-25-4 record.

And this is the part most people miss: the Capitals' strategy against the Mammoth could be a game-changer. With Carlson out, how will the team adapt? Will McIlrath's experience make a difference? These are the questions that will shape the outcome of this intriguing matchup.
