Bruce Springsteen, the iconic musician and activist, took a bold stand against the Trump administration and its immigration policies at the Light of Day Winterfest. In a powerful speech, he addressed the controversial deployment of ICE agents and the tragic shooting of Renee Good, a mother of three.
"This song is a tribute to the American dream and the potential we hold as a nation," Springsteen explained as he introduced 'The Promised Land.' He continued, "We are a country of beauty and flaws, and right now, we're facing a critical test of our values and ideals. The United States, with its 250-year history, is undergoing an unprecedented challenge to its core principles."
The audience's applause echoed the sentiment, as Springsteen emphasized, "These values are more endangered than ever. As we gather here tonight, celebrating love, community, and truth, we must speak out. Democracy, liberty, and the pursuit of truth are worth fighting for. No one should be above the law, and we cannot stand idly by as armed federal forces invade our cities, employing tactics reminiscent of the Gestapo."
And here's where it gets controversial: Springsteen directly called out the president, urging him to heed the words of Minneapolis' mayor and remove ICE from the city. The audience erupted in cheers, supporting Springsteen's stance.
But this wasn't just a one-off statement. Springsteen has a history of using his platform to address political issues, as seen during his European tour with the E Street Band last year. His criticism of the Trump administration sparked a social media backlash from the president himself, including a meme depicting a golf-ball-wielding Trump knocking Springsteen down.
The Light of Day event, supported by Springsteen, raises awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease and related illnesses. It was a star-studded night, featuring performances by Gary "U.S." Bonds, Adam Weiner, Dramarama, and more. Springsteen's appearance was a surprise, joining Willie Nile and James Maddock for 'One Guitar.'
"I knew they were going to bring the heat," Bonds said, embracing Springsteen. At 86, Bonds' career was revitalized by Springsteen's hits, like 'This Little Girl,' performed that night.
Springsteen, at 76, showed no signs of slowing down, declaring, "I've got at least a decade left in me."
The six-hour show concluded with a rendition of 'Light of Day' and a birthday celebration for festival founder Bob Benjamin, who has been battling Parkinson's since 1996. Confined to a wheelchair, Benjamin received a heartfelt tribute from Springsteen.
"Bob Benjamin has done more for the Parkinson's cause than anyone I know," Springsteen said. "Let's sing for him."
The Boss wrapped up the night with an acoustic 'Thunder Road,' inviting the audience to join in.
