Bloomfield residents are up in arms over a proposed scrapyard, fearing it will bring pollution and disrupt their peaceful rural existence. The rezoning plan, which could allow a 1.2-hectare property to become a medium industrial zone, has sparked concern among the tight-knit community. Residents worry about the potential impact on their property values, local wells, and the overall character of their rural haven. The proposal has been met with resistance since May when the local council notified residents within 100 meters of the site. Krista Bietz-Bielecki and Kathy Brideau, who live just outside the notification area, express their frustration, feeling like they have little control over the situation. They fear the scrapyard will bring increased noise, pollution, and a loss of the rural charm they cherish. The opposition is further fueled by a suspected unlicensed salvage operation already taking place on the site, as evidenced by recurring noise and strong odors. Residents have reported these concerns to the Department of Environment and Climate Change, who confirmed the potential for an illegal operation. The investigation is ongoing, but the residents' fears are palpable. The proposed zoning, designed for Hampton, allows lighter industrial uses than those found in major cities, where scrapyards are restricted. However, the conditions recommended by town staff, such as enclosed buildings and a 100-meter setback from residential properties, may not be enough to assuage residents' worries. The applicant, PickUpPro Appliance & Electronics Recycling Ltd., claims the site is well-suited for appliance and electronics recycling, with operations taking place inside a 3,600-square-foot building to minimize environmental impact. However, the residents of Valley Waters, a neighboring community, have also voiced their opposition, warning of potential cross-boundary impacts. The proposal has been referred back to staff for revisions before a final vote on July 14, leaving the residents of Bloomfield in a state of uncertainty. The outcome of this rezoning battle will shape the future of their rural community, and the residents are determined to protect their way of life.
